Traveling with children can be tedious, heavy and absolutely, absolutely wonderful. We list everything you need to think about before you leave.

Illness and insurance

When traveling, and during long flights, the risk of infection increases. Therefore, check who to contact on site if something happens, and where the nearest doctor is. Also pack a travel pharmacy with the essentials. Here you can read about what is good to pack before a trip with children. Keep in mind that young children have to take their vitamin D drops every day, even in countries where the sun gasps for days on end. When it comes to insurance, the need varies depending on where you are going. If you travel within Europe, you must make sure to bring your EU health insurance card. It gives you the right to healthcare in the countries with which Sweden has agreements. In other countries, other insurances are needed, otherwise you may have to pay for your health care yourself. Something that can be a very expensive story. Ask your insurance company what applies to your family and save all receipts. Also keep in mind that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Swedish state do not usually pay for ambulance transport home.

The flight

Flying so far that you change time zones can disrupt children's routines regarding food and sleep. Feel free to travel during the night to reduce the impact. If you travel with children, you must not sit at the emergency exit, as it must be easy to access. Special seat belts for young children are provided by the airline. Get in touch and ask in good time.Traveling with children means extra packing. Ask what applies if you want to bring a pram, car seat or extra luggage. In hand luggage, it is wise to bring extra changes for children, wet wipes, extra nappies, vomit bags and necessary medicines.Bring food and snacks, preferably things that the children are used to. Good to have both on the flight and during the rest of the trip to keep up the mood and energy. Do not forget the drink, it is incredibly low humidity on the plane. So it is important to drink a lot, for both big and small.Children are also bothered by pressure in the ears during flights. With older children, you can help to equalize the pressure by holding your nose while the child blows outwards with his mouth closed. It can also be smart to have something to chew on, like raisins or something else a little tougher. Smaller children may have a pacifier, or a baby bottle with a drink in it. There are also pressure-equalizing earplugs to buy at the pharmacy.[caption id="attachment_1179" align="alignnone" width="1650"]

Travel by car and train

When you instead travel by car or train, it is advantageous to get away early or late, so that the children can sleep at least part of the trip. Bring your snacks and drinks. If you travel by car, we recommend taking a break often, instead of taking a single long break. See if you can find a playground on the road so that the children can play. You get a lot of running in the legs from sitting still in a car for a long time. It may be enough if you find a large boulder or a fallen tree trunk to play around for a while.

The big checklist

Before you go to the airport or train station, it may be a good idea to check out the following:

  • Are all passports valid? Look so they are valid for at least 6 months after the flight. You should of course check this out well before departure, as it can take a while to get a new passport.
  • Visa? Does the final destination require a visa?
  • What vaccinations are required?
  • Check out the insurance, what exactly applies to you?
  • What is available at the hotel? Cot, sulky to borrow? Smart to check out before a trip with children
  • If you live in an airbnb, you can check once more if the apartment is adapted for children your age.
  • Enter the number for SOS International in your phone so it is easy to contact. The alarm center can be reached around the clock on telephone number +46 7010 50 50

To pack your before traveling with children

As previously mentioned, it is great to bring a change of clothes so that your children can change into cooler clothes when you get off the plane.Do not forget the toys! Maybe your kids can pack their own backpacks with their favorite toys. Bring storybooks and loaded ipads with movies.A fun tip is to prepare surprise packages, so when it gets a little noisy or whiny, you can pick out small surprises. Maybe a tablet bag, a club, a craft book or a comic book.

Ready for the beach

In warm countries, the sun is at its strongest in the middle of the day. Take a siesta after lunch to avoid the heat and harmful rays.Children should have covering clothes, there are swimwear to buy. Supplement with sun protection factor for children and cap to put on the head.Keep track of the temperature. Both in the sun, in the shade under the parasol and in the pram. Never cover the entire pram, but make sure that fresh air can circulate inside. In addition, we always recommend a water bottle close at hand and refreshing snacks such as fruit, to nibble on between meals. Do not forget to cool off with at least one ice cream a day.More tips here.[caption id="attachment_1176" align="alignnone" width="1656"]
